Marshfield man sentenced for killing deer with boat

A 56-year-old Marshfield man will serve jail time for running over a swimming deer with a power boat, while hunting in Ontario, according to Canada’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
Under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Philip Borofka was sentenced earlier this month to 10 days in Canadian jail, an $11,000 fine and was suspended from hunting in Ontario for seven years for illegal deer hunting involving a power boat, according to the Ontario Court of Justice.

Borofka was part of a six-man hunting party that forced deer from an island in the Cochrane Island area of Lake of the Woods on Oct. 20, 2008, a news release said.
He shot at the swimming deer from the boat. After missing, he ran it over, mortally wounding it with the engine’s propeller, Brooks said.

Conservation officers witnessed the killing through the use of surveillance, said Matt Brooks, a conservation officer in the Kenora District of Northwestern Ontario.

Brooks said he hasn’t witnessed or heard about any similar incidents during eight years of working in the district. He said shooting at animals from a boat is a problem, but “running them over? No.”

“It’s of course a disgusting display,” Brooks said, “and our concern is it’s putting hunters in a bad light with this type of behavior, which is not typical.”

Brooks said if Borofka does not return to Canada to serve his 10 days in jail, the Ontario Court of Justice will issue an arrest warrant. A letter was sent to Borofka, but

Brooks said it’s unclear how much time he’ll have to serve his sentence before a warrant is ordered.

The $11,000 fine includes $6,000 for mortally wounding a deer with a power boat, $1,500 for shooting a deer from a power boat and $3,500 for shooting a swimming deer.

Borofka’s firearm and the boat, owned by a third party, will not be returned until he pays the fines, Brooks said.

Borofka was not present at the trial, and a “not guilty” plea was entered on his behalf, Brooks said.

A phone message left with Borofka was not immediately returned to the Marshfield News-Herald.

Deer hunter charged

TORONTO -- A Wisconsin man's unorthodox hunting technique, which had him combine a firearm and powerboat engine propeller to take down a deer, earned him 10 days in a Northern Ontario jail.
Philip Borofka, 56, was sentenced to jail in addition to more than $10,000 in fines in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora, on March 5.
Borofka was also suspended from hunting in Ontario for seven years. The boat, owned by a third party, and Borofka's firearm were to be returned once the fines are paid.
Conservation officers say a hunting party forced a deer from Cochrane Island into the waters of Lake of the Woods on Oct. 20, 2008. They say Borofka shot at the swimming deer, ran over it in the boat and then shot it again.
Borofka told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the charges are "exaggerated" and "absurd."

What a horrible, horrible thing to do. Shoot it while it's swimming, run it over with the boat propeller and shoot it again. I hope that sonofabitch gets his nuts crushed in a vice, they get gangrene, fall off and take his dick with them to hell.

LOL. I see you're filling in for Nic. Speaking of which, I wonder why he doesn't post here anymore. I suspect it has nothing to do with being the underdog and everything to do with being a topdog. whip.gif

I have always been kind of corny and willing to make silly jokes. It used to be fun and I thought added a bit of levity. Then iowa cornered the market on hokey and it’s not quaint anymore, it’s just plain stupid.

Sorry, I’ll try to restrain myself in the future.

And we can move this to recipes if you like, but what is in a Mexican casserole? Besides love, of course. A Tex-Mex inspired Anglicized conglomeration actually sounds pretty good.

I love Mexican food. The taco truck I used to frequent parks elsewhere now, so I don’t get my Mexican food fix like I used to.

It was delicious. Something where you'd want 2nd's but there was none. I googled recipes online (had an idea what I wanted to do first) and took some tips and then winged it, trying to change another recipe I used to make with green chili peppers & chicken.

For 2 (if you want 2nds double it).

2 chicken cutlets (boneless/skinless)
Badia Fajita Seasoning (Badia has a Spanish spice section in our mkts here), sea salt, fresh ground pepper, cumin
About 1/2 of a red (or green) bell pepper chopped, hunk of onion chopped, 1 garlic clove minced
Small can of Ortega Green Chili Peppers (either chopped or whole) - these are delicious and not hot
Shredded cheddar cheese (bagged kind - don't get seasoned one)
Tostita Corn Tortilla chips
about 1/2 cup of Half & Half (coffee milk)
Squeeze of fresh lime

Dry cutlets with paper towel. Dry rub them liberally with Fajita seasoning, salt/pepper. Get veg. oil hot in non stick pan. Sear them til crusty brown. Right before they're done, throw in the red bell pepper, onion...then 30 seconds later the garlic. Toss around veggies for about 30 sec. Dump that on a plate, squeeze a bit of fresh lime over them and set aside.

In same fry pan, add your half & half & good handful of cheese and your can of green chilis (w/juice). A pinch of cumin. Mix til cheese melts & smooth. Looks kinda pukey but is delicous.

Now slice each chicken cutlet, but not all the way through, sort of like a fan. This allows the cheese sauce you'll add to penetrate. Roughly break up a good handful of tortilla chips and place on bottom of glass baking/casserole dish, place the chicken on top. Add bell pepper, onion, garlic on top of chicken. Pour your cheese sauce over. Add a bit more cheese on top of all. Cover with foil & bake 325 for 30 min. Remove foil for about 5 min. at end.

Serve with side salad. The tortilla chips are still a bit soggy/crunchy, like what happens to them in a nacho salad. And they stick together on the bottom into one piece that you break when serving. mmmmmm.

Okay, deer are killed out on the water and where is Gilligan?
Maybe the seal hunt has him busy...

iowanic
And you give up too easy, XX.

Question of the day: Are five quaints a quade?
XXMag
Props, they’re not just for manatees anymore.

I think I’m going to try that casserole next week. That sounds good.
iowanic
Why would Manatees need props? Couldn't they just use the real thing?

If your store only has whole green chili peppers in a can just chop 'em but use the juice too. And if you
can't find fajita seasoning, use any dry chicken rubs it doesn't matter.
