True, a great deal of how cold it is in a deer stand has to do with perception. It's psychological. But some of it is reality. Even 15 feet off the ground you are usually more exposed to wind. Not to mention that you have to sit still.
When I think back to the times I've been nearly frozen. And I mean cold to a dangerous degree, I've been deer hunting.
And it doesn't take much elevation to really increase wind speed. Topography can accelerate wind speed at ground level too. One of my best spots happen to be a very good funnel.
I do a lot of deer hunting at ground level. At the opposite end of the spectrum, a ground blind can be wondrously miserable too. Sitting or standing on frozen ground is quite a treat.
