I check in from time to time, but summer is a busy time. I was at the Calgary Stampede a couple days this week helping out at the Rarebreeds Canada booth by the light horse displays. The rare breeds on the days I was there were Shetland Pony, Exmoor Pony, Newfoundland Pony, Halflinger, and Lac La Croix Indian Pony (less than 100 remaining). Unfortunately, Stampede Committee doesn't allow Rare Breeds Canada to bring in anything other than the rare equines to educate the public about all the other domestic livestock breeds in danger of disappearing. icon_sad.gif

Rare breeds I want when we find our farm:

Canadienne cattle (vulnerable)
Lac La Croix Indian Pony (critically endangered)
American Saddlebred (critically endangered)
Canadian Horse (still listed as at risk)
Pilgrim Geese (critically endangered)
Chantecler chickens (only Canadian chicken breed, rare)
Large Black Pig (critical)

It's the official name. It was the preferred breed for settlers because these pigs are very hardy outdoors. The breed declined so badly because they aren't suited to being raised in barns (they are grazers) and processers want the pink-skinned breeds.

Large Black Pigbreeders Club (UK)

The Lac La Croix Indian Pony was developed by the Ojibway and Chippewa in Northern Ontario. It is thought that they were developed with the smallest of the Canadian Horses and Spanish Mustangs. We have some farmers in Minnesota to thank for their preservation, in 1977 they rescued the few ponies remaining on the reserves and kept them in a semi-feral state. In the early 1990's they contacted Rare Breeds Canada and RBC instituted a repatriation & breeding program.

envirolink is just too weird. a place where the likes of ranka's ideas are even considered acceptable by more than a couple posters is well just not for me i guess.

yeah, I've been neglecting this board, AR.net is a dead zone (Brian is gone and the board has been overtaken with spam) and Envirolink is getting boring, so I decided to stop by here. I've been busy gardening, and working a lot of OT.
How is everyone, and has anyone heard from Donnie yet?
Hey Jim, do you post over at Petasucks?
