Alamba Thunder Pussy (from Richmond VA... filmed in my friend's house... guest appearance by GWAR): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B6vEEbHwjM...feature=related That was pretty good. And anything that has the GWAR stamp of approval is alright with me. I think I went to a party in that house back in the '90s For me, Opeth was an aquired taste. But damn, after a while I couldn't get enough. QUOTE For me, Opeth was an aquired taste. But damn, after a while I couldn't get enough. Same here. I think most forms of "extreme" music, whether it be black & death metal, hardcore punk, industrial, etc. are an acquired taste. And most people will never get it. When my wife heard Opeth, Cradle of Filth, and some of the other metal I like, her response: "how can you listen to this?" But hey, I don't understand what the hell she sees in the Dave Matthews Band. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_crazy.gif) |

I'm definitely more of a black metal guy. The only "pure" death metal band I really like is Cannibal Corpse. They're good technically, and I LOVE the over-the-top, grade-b slasher movie lyrical shtick they've got going. It's hilarious. Most of the sludgey, grindcore- type death metal is to slow paced for my taste. Some more cool black metal I like: Moonspell "Wolves From the Fog" You might like this one, Dave. It's slower than most black metal. The sound effects of wolves howling at the beginning and end are very cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1GMFxoy9n0 Dimmu Borgir "In Death's Embrace" These guys use a lot of keyboards and are very melodic. Not as harsh as some other BM, and surprisingly very catchy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laTpy0i9J0g Moonspell. I had forgotten about them. I've got their disc Sin Pecado and don't much care for it. But I had a great album of thiers before that one -- and this is how long ago this was -- my car at the time ate the cassette... I wish I could remember the name of that album, or more importantly, the name of my favorite track from it. Griz, ever heard of an outfit called The Dillinger Escape Plan? The real metal head here at work is a big fan of theirs. I'm not too crazy about it, but it sounds like you might like it. And I mention them all of the time, but if anyone out there likes metal at all, you've got to check out Stolen Babies. It's not nearly as heavy as anything we're talking about, but it's very cool and interesting. There's something about lead accordian in a metal band that I love. QUOTE Same here. But hey, I don't understand what the hell she sees in the Dave Matthews Band. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_crazy.gif) I flit back and forth between some wildly disparate , and usually far removed from main-stream, stuff. My wife, the pop-music junkie (for the most part), can hardly stand any of it. The funny part is that she claims to like country music, but won't play any of my country CDs. Stuff like Johny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, George Jones... stuff like that. You know, some of the greatest country musicians ever. And the other stuff I'm into: prog-rock, most metal that ain't FM radio ready, bluegrass, etc. foget it. She won't have anything to do with it. |

Train Song ~ Ralph Stanley II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZjwIoo6wd4 A year ago or so I was working in the field with a surveyor from our VA Beach office. It turns out he was from Texas and told me he liked country music. Like I told him, we've got the best country station in the world, IMO, and we tuned in. As proof, the request hour at noon was clogged with old timey bluegrass and awesome classic country... Great classic shit you won't hear anywhere. Then they blasted this one over the airways. To paraphrase: "Who the hell is this, and why have I never head it before?" This was all it took. It turns out that a Texan figures we've got a half decent understanding and appreciation of country music here in the Valley. I wouldn't have figured that this was possible... Didn't seem like the time to tell him that I think Bob Wills' tunes suck ass... |

Messing around with my bass, and remembered, Waiting Room was a cool baseline... I used to know that one, how does it go?
Where the hell did that CD go? I swear I saw it ten years ago or so... Oh well, thank you youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMOAXm94VWo Waiting Room~Fugazi I am a patient boy I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait... In the waiting room. I don't know what it is with me and puns... I love these lyrics. I saw these guys once. Of all places, they put on a show on the front steps of the dining hall of my college. That was a cool show. |

Waiting Room a la marching band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc8eIeJ3qAI...feature=related Executed better this could be fantastic. I was thinking that this could be a great bluegrass tune -- the lyrics are almost a narrative, and it's got an alright hook -- one main problem being that no one would ever get the joke. Though I'm assuming that I'm the only bluegrass fanatic with a Fugazi album... if I ever find the damn thing. |
